Rich, multi-dynamic instruments with down and up-bow samples, gigabytes of articulations, convenient switching and cross-fade parameters, and release samples which preserve each note's native resonant string decay make this an eminently playable and expressive tool. Great care was taken during recording and production to preserve the aural integrity of each sample with a minimum of applied processing, allowing the transparent beauty of each section to shine through. The result of this dedication is a collection which is truly an instrument unto itself and an essential vehicle for any composer who values their creative medium as much as their craft. The Giga forums are a very popular stop for those seeking Giga-specific information, support, and input from other Giga users. There are four – count them, four – Giga forums on our BBS, including individual areas to discuss Giga tips, system troubleshooting, sound libraries and general Giga talk. If you haven’t been there yet, I highly recommend that you drop by and say hi. http://www.tascambbs.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi Recently, in response to one of the most common questions I get asked, I posted a request for Giga users to list what they use in the way of system hardware for their Giga computers. Many Giga users have responded, and it has quickly become a fairly valuable reference source for building the best Giga computer. In your quest to get the most out of Giga, you may have wondered what other folks are successfully utilizing in their systems, or perhaps you can share some insight on how to build the ultimate Giga rig. Either way, be sure to give this thread a peek and help increase the Giga-knowledge! http://www.tascambbs.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=001634 GigaStudio And Hans Zimmer When you think of music for films, you really don’t get any bigger or better than Hans Zimmer. If you look at any major motion picture made in the last 15 years, it is more than likely that Hans’ name is associated with it. From films like The Last Emperor, Rain Man, and Driving Miss Daisy in the 1980’s through the 90’s with The Lion King, Thin Red Line, and Backdraft, Hans has been responsible for some of the most revered music for film in the business. I recently had the opportunity to visit his production facility in Los Angeles and meet with Hans as well as his main Giga-dude Bart Hendrickson. Besides his personal production room on the premises (adjectives like gorgeous, extensive, unbelievable, and overwhelming come to mind…), Hans has recently put the finishing touches on an identical facility at his home. Hans proudly announced that he runs no less than twelve GigaStudio computers in each working environment, and has to come to depend on the rigs as the main music creation devices in both facilities. With all of this Giga-presence in Hans’ world, he depends quite a bit on assistant Bart Hendrickson to keep things running smoothly. With all of this technology pulsing in Zimmer’s world, this is by no means a simple task. Look for my interview with Bart in the near future where we discuss important Giga topics like working with the undisputed king of music for film, building 25,000 sample libraries, beer, the search for the elusive “sample groupie”….and “I get paid to do this????!” Giga On The Road It is common opinion that GigaStudio is top dog in the professional music composing world. Two events in the month of September showcased the power of Giga to composer symposiums in Seattle and Hollywood, and one brought me to The Great White North. On the evening of September 18th, Giga-god Dave Govett and I trekked to the Los Angeles Film School to do a presentation on GigaStudio and The Garritan Orchestral Strings (Dave was involved in the programming of GOS). The coordinators of the event asked the composers what they were most interested in seeing in the way of a presentation, and a collective and most resounding “GigaStudio!” can still be heard echoing through the valleys. Giga is cool and all, but word on the street is that everyone just wanted to see me and Dave Govett…although Govett claims he wasn’t sent an evening dress to wear like the one I received….hmmmm. (Note to self: don’t wear creepers with a chiffon evening dress ever again). On September 25th, I was in Washington on the Microsoft campus with Gary Garritan himself (Gary lives on a beautiful island just south of Vancouver) to do a presentation to a group of composers in Seattle. From Seattle, I headed up to Vancouver to visit the folks at Radical Entertainment (see the June newsletter for more on this amazing company) and to do a couple of smaller presentations and a possible clinic or two. That’s all for this issue of Giga News…time for the Giga Cowboy to ride once again into the sunset! Drop Us A Giga-line Got a suggestion or specific question for us?
